Bonnie Schneider
After graduating from an Bachelor of Music program (Boston University, 1963) however, after witnessing the liberal arts as a teacher (Brown University 1971-75), I am an advocate of education that integrates studying the arts along with studies in many other subjects. It's not unusual for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! My ethnomusicology degree, which began at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within the department of music in a College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple interests is something I really love. I very much enjoy teaching students in the undergraduate level (majors and non-majors) who I've written three books - Music in India: the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Cultural Expression, Music) and graduate students. In between, I'll alternate between periods that are primarily academic pursuits and administrative tasks (I served as Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean for Undergraduate Advising in 1992-98 and Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of the Group of Asian Studies from 1999, and now am back as Chair of Department of Music).
